Kiril Dimitrov won in three sets in the opening round of qualifying at the 2008 D'Novo Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. on Monday.
Dimitrov, the No. 103 singles player in the ITA preseason singles rankings, faced a tough challenge in the first round of qualifying as he drew Omar Altmann of Pepperdine. Altmann is the No. 18 seed in the tournament and is ranked No. 65 in the nation.
The first set came down to the wire with Dimitrov coming out on top, 7-5, to take a key advantage in the match. Altmann fought back to force a third set when he won the second by a 6-4 count. The third and deciding set ended up not as close as the first two. Dimitrov sailed to a 6-1 win to advance to the next round.
Dimitrov improved to 6-2 on the season in singles. He earned his third victory over a ranked opponent in 2008. He moves on to face No. 96 Matt Allare of Ohio State on Tuesday.
Duke's doubles tandem of Dimitrov and
Reid Carleton will also begin play in qualifying on Tuesday. They will take on Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala of Texas.
