DURHAM, N.C. - The first round of singles was played Friday in the Wilson/ITA Carolina Regionals with five Blue Devils winning matches in the round of 128 to advance forward.
All five victories came in straight sets. Duke will have eight players in the round of 64 as Reid Carleton, Henrique Cunha and Dylan Arnould all received byes in the first round.
Sophomore David Holland picked up the first win of the day, defeating Charlotte's Michael Anders 7-6 (2), 6-2. Next up Holland will face Harry Menzies of South Carolina at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Jared Pinsky had one of the best matches for Duke, cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Troy Moore of Winston Salem State. Pinsky will play his next match at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
Torsten Wietoska earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Ryan Ybarra of UNC-Wilmington and moves on to face Phillip Kloc of Appalachian State Saturday at 11 a.m. Also playing at 11 a.m. will be Aaron Carpenter who defeated Elon's Clark Howell 6-2, 6-3 in the round of 128.
Luke Marchese downed Trent Constance of Appalachian State, 6-3, 6-2, to round out Duke's singles action on Friday.
Two doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals with both duos winning two matches on Friday.
The No. 2 seed in the tournament, Carleton and Cunha earned a pair of 8-4 wins. They downed Chris Cooprider and Illia Ziamtsov of UNC-Wilmington in the round of 32 and then defeated Matt Gordon and Ernesto Ramos of Coastal Carolina in the round of 16. Michel and Wietoska won 8-6 in both rounds, claiming victories over Campbell's Josep Baro and Davy Sum and Clemson's No. 9 seed Rob Bizjak and Wesley Moran.
Arnould and Holland won their first match, 8-3, against Max Ando Hirsh and Michael Pereira of UNC Wilmington before falling to the No. 4 seed Iain Atkinson and Steve Forman of Wake Forest, 8-4.
Two rounds of singles will be played on Saturday. The first round will begin at 8:30 a.m. with all of Duke's remaining players competing at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The second round of the day in singles and one doubles round will be held at the University of North Carolina.
