DURHAM, N.C. - The Wilson/ITA Carolina Regionals continued Saturday with three Duke players advancing to the round of 16 in singles and one doubles team moved on to the semifinals.
Two Blue Devils who received first round byes took advantage Saturday, winning two singles matches to advance. Junior Reid Carleton, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, won a pair of close second sets in his two wins. He defeated Winthrop's Sergey Belov 6-3, 7-5 in the round of 64 and then downed Alex Funkhouser of Coastal Carolina 6-4, 7-6 (8) in his second match of the day. Carleton is now 6-4 on the season and will face the No. 17 seed Jose Hernandez of North Carolina at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
Freshman Henrique Cunha improved to 14-2 in singles with two quick straight-set victories. He claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win over Clemson's Derek DiFazio and then cruised past Alain Humblet of Appalachian State 6-2, 6-1. Next up Cunha, who is the No. 5 seed, will take on the No. 9 seed Iain Atkinson of Wake Forest at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
Torsten Wietoska is the only non-seeded Duke player still alive in singles. He won his second and third matches of the weekend, defeating Phillip Kloc of Appalachian State in three sets 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-2 and then upsetting No. 80 Carlos Alvarez, who is the No. 6 seed, in straight sets 7-5, 6-4. Wietoska is now 5-3 in singles and will face the No. 9 seed Brennan Boyajian of North Carolina in the next round at 10 a.m. Sunday morning.
Three other Blue Devils won their first singles match before losing in the round of 32. Dylan Arnould, the No. 7 seed, rolled over Kosta Blank of UNC-Wilmington 6-2, 6-3 but was upset in on a third-set tiebreaker. He fell to North Carolina's Cameron Ahari 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3). David Holland defeated Harry Menzies of South Carolina 6-4, 6-2, but lost to the top seed, No. 16 Clay Donato of North Carolina 6-1, 6-0. Jared Pinsky started with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Furman's Andrew Mellow and then fell to North Carolina's Ryan Noble 6-4, 7-6.
Alain Michel, who lost in the first round of singles, won his consolation match on Saturday 7-5, 7-5 over Chris Motes of Furman.
In doubles, Carleton and Cunha moved on to the semifinals with an 8-4 win over Boyajian and Noble. The Duke pair will face the No. 3 seed and No. 29 doubles team nationally, Donato and Stefan Hardy of North Carolina, for a spot in the finals. Michel and Wietoska fell in the quarterfinals to the No. 4 seed Atkinson and Steve Forman of Wake Forest, 8-3.
Sunday's matches will all take place at the University of North Carolina. The day's action will start with two rounds of singles with one doubles round to follow.
