TULSA, Okla. - Dylan Arnould and Henrique Cunha each won singles matches on Monday in the first round of qualifying for the D'Novo ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
Arnould, a senior from Northampton, Mass., fell behind early in his match against Vanderbilt's Vijay Paul. Arnould lost the first set 7-5, but battled back to earn a close 7-5 win in the second set and then pull away for a 6-3 victory in the third. Arnould, who is ranked No. 86 in singles, will move on to face No. 70 Eric Quigley of Kentucky in the second round. Arnould is now 4-1 in singles on the season.
Cunha, a freshman from Jau, Brazil, extended his winning streak to five straight with a three-set win over Dmitry Lebedev of Arkansas. Cunha won the first set with ease, 6-1, but lost the second 6-2. He jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third set before Lebedev made a charge to eventually tie the set at 5-5. Cunha would then take the next two for a 7-5 win, improving to 9-1 overall in his first collegiate season. He will move on to face Mirko Zapletal of Fresno State.
The second round of singles will take place on Tuesday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa. The first two rounds of doubles qualifying will also be played on Tuesday as Cunha and Reid Carleton begin competition.
