TULSA, Okla. - Freshman Henrique Cunha earned his second win over a top 20 opponent when he defeated No. 17 Dean Jackson of San Diego in the first round of the D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships on Thursday.
Cunha is now 5-1 against ranked opponents in his first collegiate season after claiming a straight-set win over Jackson, 6-4, 6-4. He extended his winning streak to eight straight and improves his singles record to 12-1. Next up Cunha will square off against Ashley Watling of Tulsa in the round of 32.
Duke junior Reid Carleton, who is ranked No. 29 in singles, suffered a first round loss. Carleton lost to No. 13 Justin Kronauge of Ohio State 6-3, 6-1. Also losing in the first round was the Blue Devils' doubles team of Carleton and Cunha. The duo fell to No. 6 Moritz Baumann and Marek Michalicka of Wisconsin, 8-3.
The second round of singles and both singles and doubles consolation matches will take place on Friday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
