TULSA, Okla. - Two Duke men's tennis players were eliminated at the D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. on Friday.
Freshman Henrique Cunha saw his run through the tournament come to an end with a tough loss to Tulsa's Ashley Watling. The first set went to a tiebreaker with Watling edging out Cunha 7-6 (4). The momentum from the tiebreaker carried to the next set for Watling as he went on to close out the match with a 6-1 win. The loss was just the second of the season for Cunha, who had won eight straight singles contests.
Junior Reid Carleton, who is ranked No. 29 nationally, faced a top 25 opponent for his third straight match. Carleton and No. 20 Boris Conkic fought to a tiebreaker in the first set with Conkic coming out on top 7-6 (5). The second set was also close but Conkic took the match with a 6-4 victory to advance.
Carleton and Cunha will be in action on Saturday in the doubles backdraw. The duo will face Virginia's Drew Courtney and Lee Singer.
