DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke men's tennis team will begin play for the 2009-10 season on Friday when they travel to Athens, Ga. for the 2009 Southern Intercollegiate Championships.
Nine of the 10 Blue Devils will be in action this weekend on the campus of the University of Georgia. Four will compete in the Division I singles bracket and four will play in the Division II singles draw.
Junior Reid Carleton earns the No. 5 seed in the Division I bracket, entering the season ranked No. 29 in the preseason ITA singles rankings. Carleton has a first round bye and is scheduled to face the winner of the first round match between Alabama's Ricky Doverspike and Wofford's Tinus Van Wyk at 1 p.m. Friday.
Dylan Arnould, who is ranked No. 86 entering his senior season and the No. 12 seed, is set to face South Florida's Jamal Adderley at 3 p.m. in the round of 64 match. Both players received a first round bye. Also earning a bye in the round of 128 is Duke's Torsten Wietoska and Henrique Cunha. Wietoska, a sophomore from Leer, Germany, will take on Mike Anders of Charlotte at 12:30 p.m. in the second round while Cunha is set to make his collegiate debut against Alabama's Michael Davis at 12 noon.
Three Blue Devils earned seeds in the Division II singles bracket. David Holland drew the No. 4 seed and will take on Martin Cederquist of the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) at 4:30 p.m. Luke Marchese is the No. 7 seed and will face Romain Viellard of ABAC at 11:30 a.m. Junior Jared Pinsky is the No. 11 seed and will await the winner of the first round match between Sergey Belov of Winthrop and Edward Jones of Tennessee. Pinsky will play his first match at 5:30 p.m.
Also competing in the Division II singles bracket is junior Alain Michel. He will face Matt Poleon of Mercer at 6 p.m. on Friday.
In doubles two Duke pairs received the No. 5 and 6 seeds. Carleton and Cunha are the No. 5 seed and will face Javier Tori and Renzo Airaldi of USC-Upstate in the round of 64. The No. 6 seed is Arnould and Holland, who receive a bye and will take on the winner between doubles teams from Central Florida and South Florida. Wietoska and Marchese will also compete in the Division I doubles bracket as they take on Boris Conkic and Edward Jones from Tennessee.
In the Division II bracket, Pinsky and senior Aaron Carpenter will team up to face Central Florida's Claudio Romano and Brock Sakey in the round of 64.
