ATHENS, Ga. - Sophomore David Holland won his first match of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships on Saturday in Athens, Ga. as weather again moved play indoors, limiting the number of matches played for the day.
Holland, playing in the Division II singles bracket, had a first round bye. He was set to face Martin Cederquist of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in the round of 64. Holland cruised through both sets for a 6-1, 6-3 victory. He will face Mikael Boyer of the College of Charleston in the next round.
Jared Pinsky was the only other Blue Devil who played singles on Saturday. Pinsky lost to Tennessee's Edward Jones in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 (4).
In doubles Duke's Reid Carleton and Henrique Cunha got off to a good start in the tournament with an 8-3 win over Javier Tori and Renzo Airaldi of USC-Upstate. Carleton and Cunha are the No. 5 seed in the tournament and will next face the team of Koncilia/Trintgnac of the College of Charleston.
Pinsky and David Lue also earned a victory in the first round of the Division II doubles. They defeated Central Florida's Claudio Romano and Brock Sakey, 8-5. Pinsky and Lue moved on to face Georgia State's pair of Moore/Thomas, losing in a tiebreaker 8-7 (4).
