COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Rachael Moss picked up her fourth straight double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs to lead Duke to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-20) win over Maryland Friday evening in Comcast Pavilion.
Moss hit .333, making just three errors on a team-leading 24 attacks while also chipping in a service ace and two blocks. Her performance helped Duke (12-2, 2-0 ACC) defeat Maryland for the seventh consecutive match.
Duke also got 10 kills and a .364 hitting percentage from junior Becci Burling, a pair of six-kill efforts from sophomore Sophia Dunworth and freshman Christiana Gray and 31 assists from setter Kellie Catanach. Gray hit .400 with just two attack errors and has now hit .300 or better in nine of Duke's 14 matches.
Duke's duo of libero Claire Smalzer and defensive specialist Nailah Waterfield kept Maryland's offense in check, combining for 24 of Duke's 43 digs. Smalzer picked up 15 of those while also dropping in two service aces. The Blue Devils totaled five aces against the Terrapins (9-6, 1-1 ACC) with the others coming from Burling, Catanach and sophomore Amanda Robertson.
Maryland hit just .072 against a Duke team that has held opponents to an ACC-low .142 hitting percentage. Brittney Grove was the Terps' top attackers with eight kills, but needed 20 attacks to reach that mark. Grove was also Maryland's top defender, finishing with a team-high 13 digs and three blocks. But Maryland, which entered the match with the second-most service aces in the ACC, put down just two aces against the Blue Devils.
Led by a pair of five-kill efforts from Burling and Moss, Duke rolled through the Terrapins for a 25-12 first-set victory. Burling, Catanach and Smalzer each contributed service aces in the opening set, which started with an 8-0 Duke run. Maryland never rebounded from the opening rally and did not reach double-digits until Duke led 19-10. From there, Duke got two kills apiece from Burling and Moss before Burling ended the opening frame with an ace.
Maryland bounced back to keep the score close in the second set, but eventually gave way to a 7-1 run that gave the Blue Devils a 25-18 win. Smalzer was the key to the second-set win, picking up 10 digs, four errorless service receptions and one ace without making a single serving error. Maryland hit just .111 in the frame, which ran as tight at 19-17 in favor of the Blue Devils. With the slim two-point lead, Catanach went to work, dishing out two assists before putting down to kills of her own - both on assists from Alex Sall - to wrap up the second-set the win.
Duke put back four blocks in the final game - including two solo stops from Catanach - to lock up the match-clinching 25-20 victory. Moss also had a solo stop in the last frame to go along with four digs. Tied at 14-14, Duke broke the last game open with a 6-2 run that put the Blue Devils ahead 20-16. From there, two kills from Gray and one each from Robertson and freshman Megan Hendrickson wrapped up Duke's 12th win of the season.
Duke will stay up north to take on Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass., on Sunday, September 27, at noon. Duke has won seven straight matches against the Eagles. Following the road trip, Duke returns home for consecutive weekend homestands, beginning with Virginia and Virginia Tech on Oct. 2-3 in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
