DURHAM, N.C. - Duke tennis players Henrique Cunha and Jared Pinsky both claimed two singles victories and one doubles win on Saturday in the ITA Carolina Regional.
With the two singles wins, Cunha and Pinsky advance to the round of 16 in the tournament. Cunha rolled in his two victories, defeating Chris Mark of Davidson, 6-1, 6-2 and Rob Lowe of N.C. State, 6-3, 6-3. Cunha is now 8-1 in singles in 2010-11. Pinsky began his day with an easy 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ryan Matthews of UNC Wilmington. Pinsky then advanced by knocking off No. 98 Dominic Hodgson of N.C. State in a third set tiebreaker 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3). It is Pinsky's second ranked victory of the season as he improved to 9-5 overall.
Duke's two doubles teams still in the tournament on Saturday both won to advance to the semifinals where they will face each other on Sunday. The No. 1 team in the country, Reid Carleton and Cunha, picked up a shutout win, 8-0, over Elon's Chase Helpingstine and Philip Nemec. Pinsky and Fred Saba will meet Carleton and Cunha tomorrow after knocking off the No. 4 seed Brennan Boyajian and Stefan Hardy of North Carolina on their home court 8-6. The two Duke teams will vie for a spot in the finals where the winner advances to the National Indoor Championships Nov. 4-7.
Three players won their first singles match on Saturday but were elminated in the round of 32. The No. 12 seed Chris Mengel started with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Leo Christofides of Coastal Carolina. Mengel then lost to Kyle Parker of the College of Charleston 6-1, 6-4. David Holland defeated Michael Pereira of UNC Wilmington 6-3, 6-2 before falling to a ranked player, No. 68 Iain Atkinson of Wake Forest, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). Saba, the No. 15 seed, cruised by Elon's Eric Turner, 6-3, 6-2, before getting beat by Danny Kreyman of Wake Forest 6-4, 6-4.
Freshman Cale Hammond was eliminated in the round of 64 with a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Davidson's Joe Schafer.
Sunday will feature two rounds of singles with the round of 16 and quarterfinals scheduled to take place at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C. Cunha will play at 9 a.m. against Kinshuk Sharma of UNC-Wilmington and Pinsky will face Atkinson at 10:30 a.m. The doubles semifinals will follow the two singles rounds.
