This weekend's indoor tournament will feature players from the states of North Carolina and South Carolina, with the winners of the regional advancing to the ITA National Indoor Championships Nov. 3-6 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
The fourth-ranked doubles pair of junior Henrique Cunha and sophomore Chris Mengel earned the top seed in the tournament and will automatically advance to the second round of play on Thursday. The Duke duo has compiled a record of 1-3 so far in fall doubles action following an appearance in the main draw at last week's ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
The tandem of freshman Raphael Hemmeler and sophomore Fred Saba also automatically advance to the second round of play as the tournament's No. 4 seed. Hemmeler and Saba claimed the B2 doubles championship at last month's Fab-4 Invite, and also advanced to the doubles final in the qualifying stage of the ITA All-American Championships.
Seniors Luke Marchese and Torsten Wietoska own a record of 2-3 this fall heading into their first-round match against Guy Kubi and Nadav Ruppin of Winthrop at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, senior David Holland and freshman Jason Tahir will team up in doubles play for the first time when they face Charleston's Tom Delme and Mickael Trintignac in a 3:30 p.m. first-round matchup in Durham.
"It's a great tournament because we have all nine guys participating," said head coach Ramsey Smith. "It will be a good test to see where everyone's game is right now. We're going to have a lot of guys seeded and some doubles teams as well, so I have high expectations for us doing well in the tournament."
The first two rounds of doubles action on Thursday will begin at 3:30 p.m. in Durham and Chapel Hill. Singles play will get underway at 8 a.m. on Friday at both locations.
