DURHAM, N.C. - Christiana Gray hit .526 with 12 kills, and Ali McCurdy picked up 26 digs to lead Duke past Boston College 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-17) on Friday afternoon in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The win was Duke's 17th straight ACC home victory in Cameron Indoor Stadium in a streak that dates back to a five-set loss to No. 19 florida State on Oct. 10, 2009. The Blue Devils own a 7-1 record in Cameron Indoor Stadium this season.
Gray hit over .400 for the seventh time in her last eight outings and picked up double-digit kills for the third straight match. She made only two errors on her 19 attacks and now ranks third in the ACC with a .372 hitting percentage for the season.Duke (11-6, 5-3 ACC) put forth a dominant defensive effort, holding the Eagles to a .028 hitting percentage. McCurdy stifled the Boston College offense with 26 digs, and sophomore middle blocker Chelsea Cook posted a career-high four blocks. The Eagles (6-13, 2-6 ACC) took 144 swings, but came up with only 29 kills and 25 attack errors.
Duke's All-American setter Kellie Catanach totaled 35 assists to increase her career total to 4,816. Currently ranked third all-time at Duke in the category, the 6-2 senior needs just 267 more assists to move into second place. She and classmates Sophia Dunworth and Amanda Robertson teamed up for 18 kills.
Dunworth also collected 18 digs for her second straight double-double. Over her last two matches, Dunworth had 32 kills and 36 digs.
The Blue Devils dominated the Eagles defensively in the first set, forcing them into a -.078 hitting percentage with 12 errors. Fronting the defense was Cook, who posted three of Duke's four blocks, and McCurdy and Dunworth who combined for 13 digs. Boston College had trouble stopping Gray, who went 4-for-5 attacking with no errors.
Gray took over in the second set, connecting on six of her nine attacks to lead Duke to a 25-22 victory. McCurdy continued to frustrate the Boston College offense with eight more digs, though the Eagles cut down on the attack errors and made only four on 42 attacks. Duke led by as much as six points before the Eagles made a late charge to close the gap to two at 24-22. Boston College gave away an opportunity to come any closer, however, when Brennan Clark sent a set point service error into the net.
Boston College gave Duke trouble through the first half of set three, but Duke broke away with a 9-4 run to break open what had been a three-point match. The run came with Duke leading just 15-13 and started with a combined four kills from Cook and Dunworth. Dunworth was a flawless 4-for-4 in the final game while McCurdy posted 11 digs.
Duke continues its weekend homestand on Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. showdown against ACC rival Maryland.
