CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Lane Carico delivered a double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs to lead No. 20 Miami past Duke 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-20) on Sunday afternoon in the James Knight Complex.
A 2010 All-American, Carico went 14-for-33 with only one attack error and a .394 hitting percentage. She and senior middle blocker Ali Becker combined for 26 of Miami's 48 kills as the Hurricanes (13-1, 2-1 ACC) won their fifth straight match at home and fourth straight sweep.
All-American setter Kellie Catanach led Duke's offense with 29 assists and six kills, and All-ACC middle blocker Christiana Gray knocked down a team-high nine kills. Gray ended her streak of four straight matches with a hitting percentage of at least .48, but is still averaging 2.71 kills during her last five matches.
"Miami is a good, solid team," head coach Jolene Nagel said. "All three sets were very close, and I'm proud of the effort we gave today. We need to tweak a few things going forward in order to keep improving as a team, but I saw some good things today."
Duke (8-6, 2-3 ACC) had trouble hitting past a defensive unit that leads the ACC in digs per set and also posted nine blocks in Sunday's match.
Miami held the edge in the serving game, dropping in five service aces while allowing only two to the Blue Devils – both from senior Amanda Robertson. Carico and Ryan Shaffer both had a pair of aces, while Alex Johnson had one.
Duke libero Ali McCurdy picked up 18 digs in the three sets to help hold Miami, which ranked fourth in the ACC in hitting percentage entering the weekend, to a .221 hitting percentage. Shaffer, Johnson and Carico all had double-digit digs for Miami, however, as the Hurricanes kept Duke in check with a .143 clip. Only Catanach (.462) hit over .300 for the Blue Devils, though Sophia Dunworth managed a .273 hitting percentage and eight kills on 22 attacks.
Duke had its best shot at taking a game from the Hurricanes in the second set when the Blue Devils rallied to overcome a 24-22 deficit with a kill from Robertson and a block from Robertson and Dunworth. Miami locked down, however, and got a dual block from Emani Sims and Alex Johnson before Johnson put down match point with one of her seven kills.
The Blue Devils will look to get back on track next weekend in a pair of road matches at Virginia and Virginia Tech on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 7-8.
