TULSA, Okla. – Two Blue Devils advanced to the final round of singles qualifying and will now play for a spot in the main draw of the 2013 Saint Francis ITA All-American Championships, held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa.
Sophomore Bruno Semenzato cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over San Diego State's Hunter Nicholas in his second round match Tuesday to set up a meeting with No. 116 Benjamin Lock of Florida State in the final round. The Sao Paulo, Brazil native also moved to 6-0 in fall tournament play with the win.
Raphael Hemmeler, the second seed in the qualifying draw and the 49th-ranked player in the ITA's preseason poll, will join Semenzato in Wednesday's final round of qualifying action. The junior from Zurich, Switzerland outlasted Columbia's Ashok Narayana, 6-3, 6-4, in his second round match, and will face No. 85 Axel Alvarez of Oklahoma for the opportunity to move on to the tournament's main draw.
In qualifying doubles competition, the sixth-seeded tandem of redshirt junior Cale Hammond and senior Fred Saba received a first-round bye before suffering an 8-3 setback to Lock and Marco Nunez of Florida State in Tuesday's second round.
The qualifying stage of the ITA All-American Championships wraps up Wednesday in Tulsa with the final rounds of the singles and doubles events. Winners of Wednesday's matches will move on to the tournament's main draw, which begins Thursday, Oct. 3 and continues through Sunday, Oct. 6. Twenty-sixth ranked Saba and 22nd-ranked Michael Redlicki received automatic bids to the singles main draw, while the 11th-ranked duo of junior Jason Tahir and Redlicki and the 25th-ranked tandem of Hemmeler and Semenzato will both compete in the doubles main draw.
