DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke and N.C. State men's tennis teams will co-host the USTA/ITA Carolina ITA Regional this weekend at the Cary Tennis Park. More than 128 competitors will be in action as the tournament stretches from Thursday through Monday.
The singles and doubles winners from each of the 12 USTA/ITA regions advance to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, held Nov. 6-9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Eight of the nine Blue Devils will compete this weekend: freshman Nicolas Alvarez, redshirt senior Cale Hammond, senior Raphael Hemmeler, junior Josh Levine, junior Daniel McCall, sophomore TJ Pura, junior Bruno Semenzato and senior Jason Tahir.
Alvarez has posted the Blue Devils' best overall record so far this fall, going 9-2. He earned a trip to the USTA/ITA National Indoor event by reaching the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships on Oct. 4 in Tulsa, Okla. Semenzato is not far behind with a 7-4 mark. In his last tournament, also the ITA All-American event, he advanced to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket. Hammond has also posted a winning record this fall with a 4-2 mark.
McCall, Hemmeler and Tahir have posted even records this fall with McCall at 4-4 and Hemmeler and Tahir at 3-3, but all three of Tahir's setbacks have been to opponents ranked in the preseason by the ITA.
Mengel is 2-4, Levine is 1-3 and played in his first tournament of the fall last weekend at the Wake Forest Fall Invitational. Pura is 0-3 and has played in the year-opening Duke Fab Four and last weekend's Battle in the Bay Invitational.
In doubles, Hammond and Tahir, Levine and Pura, Alvarez and Hemmeler and McCall and Semenzato will play together for the first time this fall.
Following this weekend's qualifier event, the Blue Devils will have a two-week break before returning to action with the ITA National Indoor event and at the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic Nov. 7-9 in Bradenton, Fla.
