IOWA CITY, Iowa – Duke's 200-yard medley relay team of sophomore Kaz Takabayashi, sophomore Peter Kropp, junior David Armstrong and sophomore James Peek earned a spot in Friday evening's consolation final at the NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.
The group clocked a time of 1:25.35 in Friday morning's trials to place 15th in the field heading into finals. The evening session saw the Blue Devils get off to a good start, but the relay was later disqualified due to an early takeoff on an exchange.
Duke's 1:25.35 mark in the preliminaries was the second fastest on the season behind a program record-setting time of 1:25.03 by Takabayashi, Kropp, Armstrong and Peek at last month's ACC Championship.
Kropp also represented the Blue Devils individually Friday morning, competing in the 100 breaststroke trials. Swimming in the final heat of the event, he tapped the wall at 52.76 to place 19th overall. Kropp broke the ACC record during the regular season with a 52.02 mark at the Nike Cup Invitational, which qualified him for the NCAA meet. The Los Angeles, Calif., native also broke the ACC Championship record last month in Atlanta with a time of 52.17 in the event preliminaries.
The NCAA Championship wraps up Saturday, March 28 at the University of Iowa's Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The trials session begins at 12 p.m. ET and will be streamed live with live results also available.
