DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke and N.C. State men's tennis teams will co-host the USTA/ITA Carolina ITA Regional this weekend at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. More than 128 competitors will be in action as the tournament stretches from Friday through Tuesday.
The singles and doubles winners from each of the 12 USTA/ITA regions advance to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, held November 3-6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
Nine of the 10 Blue Devils will compete this weekend: freshmen Robert Levine and Nick Stachowiak, sophomores Ryan Dickerson, Jason Lapidus, Vincent Lin and Catalin Mateas, juniors Nicolas Alvarez and Andrew DeJoy and senior TJ Pura.
Alvarez enters the draw as the No. 3 seed and faces Presbyterian's Joel Roberts in the opening round Friday. Alvarez has played just two fall matches for Duke after wrapping up his time with Peru in Davis Cup action.
Joining Alvarez as a seeded player in the draw is Mateas, who enters at No. 10. Mateas owns a 4-2 record this fall and captured third place in the White Draw of the Duke James Bonk Invitational. Mateas takes on Maximillian Scholl of Gardner Webb Friday in the first round. Levine is the No. 12 seed and is 3-3 this fall. In his last appearance, he went 2-1 at the ITA All-American Championships and came within one win of advancing to the main draw before falling in the qualifying round of 32.
Dickerson, who is making his fall debut, leads off with Gabriel Dias of Winthrop. Lin takes on Andrew Schafer of South Carolina in the opening round. Lin has played to a 2-2 mark this fall. Pura, who is 4-3 so far this fall, begins his final ITA regional against Juan Estevarena of Charleston.
The Blue Devils' fall wins leader is Stachowiak with a 6-2 record. He opens against Maksym Konovalov of N.C. Central on Friday. Stachowiak claimed fifth place in the Blue Draw of the Duke James Bonk Invitational with an upset of No. 88 Maksim Kan of Wake Forest and followed up that performance with a 3-1 showing at the ITA All-American Championships, falling one win short of moving from the prequalifying to the qualifying round.
Lapidus looks for his first singles triumph of the fall against Gabriel Cucalon of N.C. Central while DeJoy hunts his second versus Ruy Teixeira of Winthrop.
Following this weekend's qualifier event, the Blue Devils will continue in-state action with the Wolfpack Invite in Raleigh from October 21-23.
