TULSA, Okla. – Following a strong showing in the prequalifying draw, the Duke men's tennis team moved on to the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships qualilfying round Monday and kept the success rolling with two victories. Freshman Robert Levine and sophomore Catalin Mateas each advanced to the round of 64, which will take place Tuesday.
Levine began the day for the Blue Devils with an upset victory, topping No. 10 seed Alec Adamson of UC Davis, 7-5, 6-1. With Monday's victory, Levine evens his fall singles record at 2-2. He will take on Texas Tech's Ronit Bisht at 9 am ET during Tuesday's round of 64.
Mateas faced Georgia Tech's No. 15 seed Carlos Benito in the opening round and earned a 6-4, 7-5 triumph. In March during the first ACC match of the year for Duke, Mateas played a memorable three-set decision with Benito, with the Yellow Jacket earning a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory to clinch the 4-3 victory for Georgia Tech. Mateas' victory upped his overall fall singles mark to 4-1. Tuesday, he faces Yuya Ito of Texas in the round of 64 at 11 am ET.
The main draw of the All-American event starts Thursday, with junior Nicolas Alvarez already in the field.
