Alvarez Drops First Match at Indoor Championship

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Junior Nicolas Alvarez fell in his opening round match at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship on Thursday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The Lima, Peru, native was defeated 6-4, 6-3 by ACC rival Thai-Son Kwiatowski of Virginia. The two players were on serve through the first four games of the match before Kwiatowski, the draw's No. 2 seed, broke Alvarez and went on a three-game run to take a 5-2 lead. Alvarez broke back and held to make it a 5-4 deficit, but Kwiatowski got a final hold for the victory.

Again in the second set, the two were on serve through four games before Kwiatowski captured four of the final games to put the match away.

Alvarez will head to the consolation bracket and play Ryotaro Matsumura on Friday at 2:00 p.m.
