DURHAM, N.C. - As Duke Athletics nears the conclusion of 2016, we wanted to look back at some of the top moments that made it so extraordinary.
In this countdown titled, “Top 16 of 2016,” we have chosen 16 noteworthy events from the calendar year that encapsulated the spirit and success of Duke while also illuminating the growth and achievements that our athletic programs continue to attain.
The series, starting Friday, December 16, will continue daily until its conclusion on December 31.
No. 8: Nicolas Alvarez Wins Davis Cup for Peru
Before playing a match for Duke this fall, junior men's tennis standout Nicolas Alvarez helped his native country of Peru to a 3-2 victory against Venezuela in the championship match of the Davis Cup Group II Americas tournament. Alvarez, the youngest player on either squad, clinched the deciding point with a comeback 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2), 6-1 victory against Luis David Martinez. Against Venezuela, Alvarez captured two victories during the competition, first defeating ATP No. 686 player Ricardo Rodriguez in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-0. In Peru's July match against Mexico in the Davis Cup semifinals, Alvarez earned a pair of victories and finished 4-0 in Davis Cup action.
