PHILADELPHIA – Redshirt freshman
Mason Eaglin was named the Keystone Classic's Most Outstanding Wrestler after taking down two ranked opponents en route to a first-place finish.
The Port Orchard, Wash., native ran through the 174-pound division and recorded an 11-0 major decision against No. 29 ranked Neal Richards of Virginia Military Institute. To get to the finals Eaglin also had to take down another nationally ranked foe in No. 10 Dean Sherry of Rider. The redshirt freshman posted a 9-4 decision during that bout.
On the day, Eaglin finished 4-0 after registering a fall at 4:13 against VMI's Luke Nicksic and an 8-3 decision over host Pennsylvania's Jake Hendricks.
Eaglin highlighted Duke's outing in which the Blue Devils finished ninth at the annual tournament.
Kai Blake and
Vincent Baker also stepped onto the podium at the end of the day as both earned sixth-place finishes in the 184- and 197-pound divisions, respectively.
Blake posted a fall at 6:29 in his opening bout against Drexel's Anthony Walters. He then registered his second fall of the day when he took down Bryan Martin of Rider at 1:54. The Greenwood Village, Colo., native earned his third win following a 5-2 decision over VMI's Max Gallahan before falling to Virginia's Michael Battista in the fifth-place bout due to a medical forfeit.
Baker started his day off with a 10-7 decision win over Penn's Greg Bensley and a 6-3 victory against Demazio Samuel of Appalachian State. He battled back after two losses to find himself in the fifth-place match. Unfortunately, the Roswell, Ga., native dropped a close 6-5 decision to Samuel to finish in sixth for the tournament.
Ty Mills garnered a victory on the day as well at 141 pounds. The redshirt freshman took down Gerard Daly of Sacred Heart in his opening match thanks to a 4-3 decision.
Rookie
Wade Unger and junior
Eric Carter also found the win column when they defeated their opponents in the 149- and 157-divisions, respectively. Unger defeated Harvard's Zeth Dean, 10-5, while Carter recorded an 8-0 major decision over Penn's Adam Kirsh.
Duke will have a little over a month off before heading down to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for the South Beach Wrestling Duals from Dec. 29-30.
