ITA CAROLINA REGIONAL MATCH RESULTS

DURHAM – Junior Andrew Zhang and freshman Connor Krug both advance to the semifinals at the 2021 ITA Carolina Regional Championships after Sunday's matches at the Cary Tennis Park.

Zhang bested Bastien Huon of Coastal Carolina 6-3, 6-3 in the round of 16 to secure his spot in the quarterfinals. A little later in the day, Zhang then defeated Clemson's Ryuhei Azuma 6-2, 6-4 to advance to Monday's semifinal match. The Bloomfield Hills, Mich., native is set to battle Connor Thomson of South Carolina at 10 a.m. for a chance in the ITA Carolina Regional singles finals.

Rookie Krug had the tough task of facing familiar competition on Sunday as the Lakewood Ranch, Fla., native matched up against fellow teammates Faris Khan and Garrett Johns in the round of 16 and quarterfinal round, respectively. Krug advanced to the quarterfinals following an injury retirement by Khan. He then outlasted Johns in a three-set thriller. Krug won the opening set 7-6 (2) before dropping the second 6-4. He was then able to register the 7-5 victory in the third to clinch the win. He is the only freshman remaining in the singles main draw and will face Taha Baadi of Wake Forest on Monday in the semifinals at 10 a.m.

In doubles action, the Duke pair of Johns and Andrew Dale fell to the No. 1 overall seed in Brian Cernoch and Mac Kiger of North Carolina 6-3, 6-4, ending their time at the event.
