ATLANTA, Ga. - Duke men's tennis freshman
Saahith Jayaraman clinched the final point in a 4-1 victory for the Blue Devils, handing No. 42 Georgia Tech its first ACC loss Friday evening. With the win, Duke improves to 5-0 in ACC play and 12-3 overall.
Duke secured the doubles point with victories on courts two and three. At the second spot, the No. 71-ranked duo of sophomore
Cooper Williams and graduate student
Andreja Petrovic upset No. 33 Krish Arora and Christophe Clement 6-4. Graduate student
Remy Dugardin and junior
Gerard Planelles Ripoll clinched the point for Duke with a 7-6(3) win at the third spot.
In singles play, all three Blue Devils who secured points did so in straight sets. On court three, senior
Connor Krug posted a 6-4, 6-0 victory, while No. 35 junior
Pedro Rodenas earned a 6-3, 6-1 win at the top position. Jayaraman's 6-4, 6-1 triumph clinched the match for Duke.
How It Happened
- The Yellow Jackets earned the first doubles match. On court one, the No. 24 pairing of Nate Bonetto and Gianluca Carlini posted a 6-4 win over the No. 30 Duke pairing of Rodenas and graduate student Theo Winegar.
- On court two, No. 71 Williams and Petrovic upset No. 33 Arora and Clement 6-4. The Blue Devils pairing rallied past a 3-3 tie by winning three of the final four games to clinch the match.
- Duke got the 1-0 lead with Dugardin and Planelles Ripoll posting a 7-6(3) win against Gabriele Brancatelli and Robert Bauer at the third spot. The match was tied at 3-3, 4-4, 5-5 and 6-6 before it was sent to tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Duke only allowed three points and claimed the doubles point
- Georgia Tech tied the match at 1-1 as Carlini posted a two-set win on court five over sophomore Alexander Visser. Visser took three games in the first set, but Clement won 6-4. In set two, Visser fell 6-0.
- Krug made it 2-1 for the Blue Devils with a straight set win on court three. He had his match tied 3-3 in the first set but went on to win 6-4. In Krug's second set, he didn't drop a game.
- No. 35 Rodenas clinched a point at the first position to stretch the Blue Devil lead to 3-1. In set one, Rodenas took the early 2-0, but Brancatelli went on a two-game run to tie the set at 2-2. Rodenas pulled away, winning two straight games, and only allowed Brancatelli to earn one more before he finished with a 6-3 win. In his second set, Rodenas only dropped a game and clinched his match with a 6-1 win.
- Jayaraman clinched the match for the Blue Devils with a straight set win against Richard Biagiotti on court No. 6. Jayaraman fought back from a 2-4 deficit and captured four straight games in set one to win 6-4. In the second set, he dropped just one game and served out a 6-1 victory to secure the team win.
- Petrovic and Dugardin's matches remained unfinished on courts two and four.
