The Blue Devils improve to 16-7 overall and 9-4 in ACC matches while North Carolina falls to 12-10 overall and 6-7 in conference matches.
How It Happened
- The Blue Devils took the 1-0 lead by clinching the doubles point.
- On court two, Rodenas and graduate Andreja Petrovic were in a back-and-forth match with UNC's Diego Jarry and Anthony Wright. The match was tied four times before Duke's duo won two games to secure the 6-4 triumph.
- On court three, graduate Remy Dugardin and junior Gerard Planelles Ripoll defeated UNC's Constantinos Djakouris and Nick Mangiapane, 7-5. Dugardin and Planelles Ripoll jumped out to the 4-1 lead before Djakouris and Mangiapane won four out of the next five games to tie the match at 5-5. Dugardin and Planeless Ripoll secured the doubles point for Duke by winning the next two games.
- No. 15 senior Cooper Williams and graduate Theo Winegar's match remained unfinished at the first position.
- Duke jumped out to the 2-0 lead with No. 62 Williams clinching his match in straight sets at the second position. In set one, he won four straight games to rally past a 2-1 lead. He clinched his match, only allowing Djakouris to earn one game, with a 6-1 triumph in the second set.
- Blue Devils pushed to a 3-0 lead, as senior Connor Krug clinched his match in three sets on court No. 5. In set one, Jarry earned the 6-1 triumph, but Krug responded in the second, earning the dominant 6-0 victory. In the third set, he won three straight games to jump to a 4-1 lead and won two of the next four games to clinch his match.
- The match was won for the Blue Devils when No. 36 Rodenas earned a three-set come back at the first position over Vladislav Melnic. Melnic pushed past a 4-4 tie, winning two straight games to earn the first set. Rodenas responded, clinching set two with a 6-4 triumph. In set three, Rodenas won four consecutive games to rally past a 2-2 tie and served out for the win.
- Petrovic, Dugardin and senior Jake Krug's matches remained unfinished.
Quotes
- "It was a great team win. North Carolina is always a tough place to play—they're a really good program. They played well, and I feel like we got their best shot in doubles. It was a great atmosphere, a great crowd, and I thought we did a really good job finishing off doubles. We had some chances that didn't go our way, and they had a lot of momentum, but we responded well."
- "Singles was just an absolute battle. We lost four first sets, and even though the final score was 4-0, that's a bit deceptive. Losing four first sets meant we had to come from behind in multiple matches, and we did. We had five matches that went to three sets. What stood out the most to me was how we flipped so many of those matches. Connor lost the first set and came back strong in the second. Andreja did the same, as did Pedro and Jake. That kind of resilience builds team momentum, even when things aren't going your way early." – Head Coach Ramsey Smith
