Chapel Hill, N.C. - Jonathan Stokke won his semifinal singles match on Sunday to automatically qualify for the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. The coaches of the two players in the finals chose not to play the final match as both players automatically qualify. Stokke also advanced to the finals in doubles with Joey Atas but the duo fell just short of qualifying with a loss.
Stokke, the fifth seed in the tournament, faced Jonathan Sucupira of Florida State in the semifinals. It took Stokke three sets but he came away with the win 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to move to the finals. He joined Radford's Martin Sayer who knocked off the top seed in the tournament, Duke's Ludovic Walter, in the quarterfinal round on Saturday. Sayer then defeated Virginia's Rylan Rizza 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 to join Stokke in the finals as both players qualify for the national tournament.
“Stokke has been working extra hard this fall,” said Head Coach Jay Lapidus. “He is in the best shape of his college career and his fitness is amazing. He deserves the rewards he gets for his hard work.”
In doubles action, Atas and Stokke defeated Corey Parr and Marius Adamaski of Wake Forest, 8-3, in the semifinal round. In the championship match, Virginia's Rizza and Darrin Cohen took the crown with an 8-4 win over the Blue Devils pair.
“Atas and Stokke played really well in the quarterfinals and semifinals,” said Lapidus. “They never quite got a hold of the finals match and if you do not come out ready to play at the beginning in doubles it is tough to come back because it is such a quick match.”
The 2005 Wilson ITA Regional Championships took place at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C. and the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham, N.C. The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships will take place in Columbus, Ohio on Nov. 3-6.
