
Ludovic Walter Advances to Round of 16 at ITA Indoor Championships

Columbus, Ohio - Ludovic Walter won in straight sets on Thursday to advance to the round of 16 at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
Walter, ranked second in the country in the preseason ITA singles rankings, squared off against Yale's Brandon Wai in the opening round of the tournament. Walter came away with a victory in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. The win moves Walter in to a tie for eighth on the all-time wins list at Duke. He ties Doug Root with 101 career wins and is now two wins shy of Peter Ayers for seventh on the career list. Walter will advance to the round of 16 where he will face Jerry Makowski of Texas A & M. Makowski, the fifth seed in the tournament and fifth ranked player in the country, defeated Virginia's Treat Huey, 6-0, 6-3, in the opening round.
Also in action on Thursday for the Blue Devils was Jonathan Stokke. He qualified for the indoor championships with a share of the Mideast Regional title. He drew sixth seeded Luke Shields of Boise State and lost a close match in three sets. Shields took an early lead with a 6-3 win in the opening set, but Stokke rallied to force a third set with a 6-3 win of his own. However, in the third set Shields, ranked 13th in the country, put the match away with a 6-4 victory to advance forward where he will face Stephen Bass of Notre Dame. Stokke will move on to face Wai in the first consolation round on Friday.
The round of 16 and the quarterfinal round of the main draw will take place on Friday as well as the consolation round of 16. The indoor championships are taking place at the Racquet Club of Columbus. Ohio State is hosting the tournament for the first time. The finals will take place on Sunday.
