Durham, N.C. ? The 15th-ranked Duke men's tennis team had its second straight match come down to the wire only to see the opposing team come out on top as No. 11 Notre Dame took a 4-3 decision at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
Similar to Friday's match against Illinois, Duke found themselves tied at 3-3 heading into the final match. On Sunday it came to the No. 5 contest between Notre Dame's David Anderson and Jared Pinsky. The two split the first two sets but in the third set Anderson jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Pinsky tried to battle back but would end up falling short 6-3 in the final set.
The Blue Devils got off to a better start than Friday as Reid Carleton and Kiril Dimitrov edged Stephen Havens and Andrew Roth in a tiebreaker 9-8 (2) to clinch the doubles point. David Goulet and Christopher Price also earned a doubles win with a 9-7 victory over Brett Helgeson and Sheeva Parbhu.
Carleton made the team score 2-0 about as quick as possible as he dominated his No. 3 singles match 6-1, 6-0 against Roth. Notre Dame then won the No. 4 and No. 6 singles contests to knot the score at 2-2.
Goulet moved up one spot in the order to the top position on Sunday. He drew No. 11 Brett Helgeson and after winning a tiebreaker in the first set 7-6 (4) he finished off the straight set victory with a 6-4 win to bring the Blue Devils within one singles victory of the team win. Goulet defeated a top-15 opponent for the second time in three days and improved to 8-1 overall in singles and 4-0 in dual match competition.
The Fighting Irish evened the score at 3-3 when Sheeva Parbhu handed Kiril Dimitrov his second straight loss at the No. 2 position 7-5, 6-4. That would set up the final match of the day that would send the Blue Devils to 2-2 on the year. Notre Dame improved to 5-1 on the season.
Duke will now have over three weeks off before their next match. They will take on Texas A&M in Durham on Feb. 29 at 1:30 p.m.
