Durham, N.C. ? The No. 42 Duke men's tennis team ended the 2007-08 regular season on Sunday with a 4-3 win over No. 50 Georgia Tech to give seniors David Goulet and Alex Stone a win in their final regular season match at Ambler Tennis Stadium.
The Blue Devils end the regular season with a 9-12 record overall and 6-5 mark in the ACC while Georgia Tech falls to 13-11 on the season and 3-8 in league play.
The match on Sunday was the ninth match this season for Duke that has ended in a 4-3 final with the Blue Devils now earning wins in two of those contests. Duke led 3-0 in the match but the Yellow Jackets made it interesting with two victories. However, junior Kiril Dimitrov won a second-set tiebreaker to clinch the match for the Blue Devils.
Dimitrov had won the first set, 6-3, against Eliot Potvin. The two players went to a tiebreaker and Dimitrov won 7-3 with the final point coming on a serving ace. It was the second time this season he clinched a match for Duke. He is now 15-16 overall and 5-6 in the ACC.
The Blue Devils also used a tiebreaker to win the doubles point. No. 50 David Goulet and Christopher Price defeated No. 43 Scott Blackmon and Ryan Smith 9-8 (8-6) at the No. 1 spot to give Duke a 1-0 lead. It is the fourth victory over a ranked doubles team for Goulet and Price as they improved to 16-13 overall and 6-5 in the ACC. Dimitrov and Reid Carleton downed Guillermo Gomez and George Gvelesiani, 8-4, at the No. 2 spot earlier in doubles.
Carleton, ranked No. 62 in singles, earned a quick victory over No. 78 David North at the No. 2 singles spot. He led 4-1 when North retired from the match due to an injury. The win gives Carleton a 24-9 overall mark and 8-3 record in ACC play. Freshman Alain Michel continued his hot play. Since moving into the singles order earlier this week he has won all three of his matches. He defeated Austin Roebuck on Sunday 6-2, 6-4 to improve to 9-7 overall and 3-1 in the ACC.
Duke will now prepare for the ACC Tournament which will be held April 17-20 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. near Orlando.
