Blue Devils Off To Big Start In Duke Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke men's tennis team got off to a great start to the Duke Invitational on Saturday, winning 14 of the 15 matches on the first day of the tournament.

The Blue Devils won all 10 of its singles contests. The defending singles champion in the Duke Invitational, Duke senior Kiril Dimitrov, picked up a win over a ranked opponent. Dimitrov, the No. 45 singles player in the country, defeated No. 120 Oscar Podlewski of Elon in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 for his fifth win over a ranked foe this year. Sophomore Reid Carleton is tied with North Carolina's Clay Donato for first place in the points standings. Carleton, ranked No. 25 in singles, earned a 7-6, 7-5 win over Elon's Damon Gooch. Carleton is now 11-3 on the season.

Seven Duke players won in straight sets in singles. Dylan Arnould downed Chase Helpingstine of Elon, 6-3, 7-6. Torsten Wietoska defeated Elon's Carlin Murry, 7-5, 6-2. Alain Michel earned a 6-1, 6-4 win over Cody Stauffer MacDowell of Elon. David Holland improved to 5-1 on the season with a 6-1, 6-4 win while Aaron Carpenter is now 6-2 after a 6-3, 6-0 victory. Junior David Lue has now won seven matches following a 7-5, 6-3 win. Jared Pinsky had the lone three-set win of the day, a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win over Philip Nemec of Elon.

Duke won four of its five doubles matches on Saturday. Carleton and Arnould won 8-4 against Helpingstine and Rojas. Holland and Wietoska played together for the first time and won 8-6. Carpenter and Pinsky earned an 8-5 victory over Crockford and Murray. Lue and Marchese cruised to an 8-2 win over Howell and Beard.

Sunday's matches are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. All of Duke's matches will be played at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center while North Carolina will play its matches in Chapel Hill on Sunday.
