
Carleton & Mengel Win Doubles Title

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Duke's Reid Carleton and Chris Mengel cruised to an 8-2 win in the championship match of the A-2 doubles flight at the UVA Ranked Plus One Invitational on Saturday.
Carleton and Mengel give the Blue Devils their third doubles title this fall, including the second for Carleton. It was the first career doubles title for Mengel, who claimed a singles championship in the Duke Fab Four Invite last weekend. The duo defeated Virginia's Philippe Oudshoorn and Justin Shane in the finals.
Also winning in doubles was Jared Pinsky and Fred Saba, who claimed an 8-5 win over North Carolina's Alex Rafiee and Williams Parker in the consolation third place match.
Carleton reached the finals of the A-3 singles bracket with two wins over ranked opponents on Saturday. He started the day with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over No. 85 Joey Burkhardt of North Carolina. He then rolled past No. 21 Rhyne Williams of Tennessee in the semifinals by a 6-3, 6-2 count. On Sunday he will play for his second straight title against No. 30 Jose Hernandez of North Carolina.
Other players competing in singles include Mengel, Pinsky and Saba. Mengel went 1-1 with a victory over Radford's Thomas Dehean and a loss in three sets to Jonathan Wolff of Wake Forest. Pinsky won his first match 6-1, 6-4 against Connor Sherwood of Wake Forest but lost in the semifinals of the B bracket to Nick Sayer of Radford 3-6, 6-0, 6-4. Saba suffered a pair of losses in the backdraw of the A-1 singles draw.
All matches are taking place at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va.
