
Duke Strong in Second Day of Main Draw at ITA Mideast Regionals

Durham, N.C. - Duke had three singles players and two doubles teams advance with wins on the second day of the 2005 ITA Mideast Regionals main draw.
Ludovic Walter, Jonathan Stokke and Peter Rodrigues each won two matches on Friday to advance to the round of 16 in singles play. Walter, the top seed in the tournament, cruised through his two matches. He defeated Will Shaw of N.C. State 6-3, 6-2 and then came out strong in his second match with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Florent Wilpotte of Campbell. Walter will face Henrique Cancado of Old Dominion on Saturday. Cancado bounced back from a 6-1 loss in the first set to win in three against Marius Adamaski of Wake Forest.
Stokke, the fifth seed, also won his matches in straight sets. He defeated N.C. State's David Rozek 6-3, 6-2 and then won 6-3, 6-3 against Francesc Lieal of Virginia Commonwealth. Stokke will play on Saturday against Sam Chang of Florida State. Chang also won both his singles matches in straight sets on Friday.
Rodrigues entered the tournament as the ninth seed. He won his first match of the day against Rodrigo Santos. Rodrigues took the first set, 6-2, and after 3-6 loss in the second he cruised to a 6-0 win to take the match and move on. In the round of 32, he made it a short match with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Felix Insaurralde of East Tennessee State. Rodrigues moves forward and will face the No. 4 seed in the tournament on Saturday as he squares off against Virginia's Rylan Rizza.
The Blue Devils had one other singles player in action on Friday. Joey Atas, the third seed, defeated Clemson's Ryan Young 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2 to start the day. In his next match, he was upset by Florida State's Jonathan Sucupira in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles action, both Duke teams left in the tournament won their match on Friday to advance to the quarterfinal rounds. Walter teamed up with Rodrigues to defeat Alex Conjanu and Stephen Ward of William & Mary, 8-2. They will face Adamaski and Cory Parr of Wake Forest on Saturday. Atas and Stokke continued to play well as a team with an 8-5 win over Jamie Cueller and Geraldo Knorr of South Carolina. Atas and Stokke will take on Chang and Sucupira on Saturday.
All of the rounds on Saturday will take place at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.The championship rounds will take place on Sunday. For more information on the tournament visit www.tennisinformation.com.
