
Jonathan Stokke Advances to SemiFinals at ITA Mideast regionals

Chapel Hill, N.C. - Jonathan Stokke won two more singles matches on Saturday to advance to the semifinal round of the 2005 Wilson ITA Mideast Regionals in Chapel Hill, N.C. Stokke also teamed up with Joey Atas to move on to the semifinals in doubles.
Stokke, the fifth seed in the tournament, came in to the day with two wins in the tournament on Friday. He faced Florida State's Sam Chang in the round of 16 and won in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. In the quarterfinal round, he took on Clemson's Sander Koning and picked up another win with a 6-4, 7-6 (8) victory. He has won all four of his matches in the tournament in straight sets. Stokke will square off against Jonathan Sucupira of Florida State in the semifinals at 9:30 a.m. in Chapel Hill on Sunday. Sucupira knocked Duke's Joey Atas out of the tournament in the round of 32.
The other two Blue Devils remaining in the singles bracket entering Saturday both suffered defeats. Ludovic Walter, the top seed in the tournament, won 6-4, 7-6 (3) in his first match of the day against Henrique Cancado of Old Dominion but lost in the quarterfinals to Radford's Martin Sayer 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Peter Rodrigues lost his match in the round of 16. He was defeated by the fourth seed in the tournament, Rylan Rizza of Virginia. Rizza advanced with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) win and would later advance to the semifinals with a win over Corey Parr of Wake Forest.
Atas and Stokke continued to play well as a doubles team with another win on Saturday. They took on Chang and Sucupira of Florida State in the quarterfinals and came away with a narrow 9-8 (5) victory to move forward in the tournament. They will take on Parr and Marius Adamaski of Wake Forest who knocked out the other Duke team left in the tournament. Parr and Adamaski defeated Walter and Rodrigues 8-3 to advance.
The singles matches will take place at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill on Sunday while the doubles matches will be held at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham.
