DURHAM, N.C. - The main draw of the Wilson/ITA Mideast Regional started Friday morning with Duke earning wins in three of its four singles matches.
"Overall, we were very pleased with the way the guys competed today," said assistant coach Josh Goffi. "We came up short in a few matches but the important thing is that the guys put themselves in a position to win. That means the work they are putting in is starting to show. Tomorrow's matches will be good tests for our guys to see where they are at with their progression as players."
Duke got off to a fast start for the second straight day with wins in three of its four singles matches. Jared Pinsky defeated Jason Morgenstern of Wake Forest in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. Pinsky evens his record to 5-5 on the year and moves on to face Clemson's Rob Bijzak in the round of 64 on Saturday. Alain Michel also won in straight sets, taking down Louis Steyn of Liberty in the round of 128 by a 6-4, 6-2 count. Michel is now 5-4 in singles action and will advance to face the No. 16 seed in the tournament, No. 115 Damon Gooch of Elon. Freshman David Holland improved to 3-0 in his collegiate career with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Javier Tori of South Carolina-Upstate. Holland is scheduled to face the No. 21 seed in the tournament Roy Sichel of Winthrop. The only Blue Devil to fall in the round of 128 singles was freshman Luke Marchese who lost a close three-set match to Zach Watson of Radford 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
Two rounds of doubles were played on Friday. The Blue Devils won all four of the opening round matches with one team advancing to the round of 16. Christopher Price and Torsten Wietoska knocked off the No. 6 seed in the tournament, Alex Ahlgren and Enrique Olivares of East Tennessee State, in the first round of doubles, 9-7. Price and Wietoska went on to win 8-5 against Maryland's David Kwon and Nickolai Nielsen to move on to the round of 16. The Duke pair will take on Florida State's Drew Bailey and Maciek Sykut in the next round, a duo that eliminated the Blue Devils' No. 9 seed Dylan Arnould and Reid Carleton on a tiebreaker, 9-8, in the round of 32. Arnould and Carleton earlier had defeated Davidson's Callum Gee and Eric Noble, 8-3.
Also earning first round wins were the doubles teams of Kiril Dimitrov and Alain Michel as well as David Holland and Jared Pinsky. Dimitrov and Michel took care of business in the first round with an 8-1 victory over Brian Coxton and Maximillian Glodde of Winston Salem State. However, they advanced to face the top seed in the tournament and No. 2 ranked team in the country, Steve Forman and Cory Parr of Wake Forest, and would lose 8-2.
