
Dimitrov, Price And Wietoska Advance In ITA Mideast Regionals

DURHAM, N.C. ? Duke's Kiril Dimitrov won two singles matches and the doubles team of Christopher Price and Torsten Wietoska won their lone match to advance in the main draw of the 2008 Wilson/ITA Mideast Regional.
Dimitrov, the No. 103 player in the country and No. 14 seed in the tournament, advanced to the round of 16 with a pair of wins. He started the day with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over David Hopkins of Wake Forest. He then downed Evgeny Slesarev of Gardner Webb 6-3, 7-6 (3) to improve to 9-3 on the season and advance. He will face the No. 1 seed Dominic Inglot of Virginia in the next round.
”I am happy with the way Kiril is playing and competing,” said head coach Ramsey Smith. “He did a good job of taking care of business today and has a great challenge against the defending champion tomorrow.”
In doubles Price and Wietoska had one match on Saturday. The duo faced Florida State's Drew Bailey and Maciek Sykut and came away with an 8-6 win for their third win of the tournament. Price and Wietoska move on to the quarterfinals where they will take on the No. 3 seed Inglot and Michael Shabaz of Virginia.
“Torsten and Chris are getting more comfortable with each other and playing better together with each match they play,” said Smith.
A total of six Duke players competed in singles on Saturday with five of the six earning victories in the round of 64. Sophomore Reid Carleton, who is No. 39 in the preseason singles rankings and the No. 5 seed in the tournament, cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Dmitry Vlaskin of Coastal Carolina in his first match of the tournament. Carleton then suffered a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Taylor Fogleman of North Carolina in the next round. Dylan Arnould won 6-1, 6-3 over Ilja Orre of William & Mary but lost 7-5, 6-1 against Nicolas Vinel of Virginia Commonwealth in the round of 32. Jared Pinsky won his fourth match of the tournament with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Rob Bijzak of Clemson. Pinsky later fell to No. 75 Houston Barrick of Virginia 7-6 (4), 6-2. Freshman David Holland stretched his win streak to four straight to begin his college career with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win over the No. 21 seed Roy Sichel of Winthrop. However, Holland then took on the No. 2 seed and 24th-ranked player in the country, Wake Forest's Cory Parr, and lost 6-0, 6-0.
The only Blue Devil to suffer a defeat in the morning was sophomore Alain Michel. After winning three matches in the qualifying and main draw rounds, Michel fell short against the No. 16 seed and 115th-ranked singles player Damon Gooch of Elon 7-5, 6-0.
Sunday's matches will take place at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C. Dimitrov is scheduled to play at 9 a.m. as the round of 16 for singles will be played to begin the day.
