DURHAM, N.C. ? Sophomore Reid Carleton won two more singles contests on Saturday at the UVA Ranked Plus One Invitational to advance to the finals.
Carleton, who was ranked No. 39 in the preseason ITA singles rankings, improved to 8-1 on the year in singles action with two more wins. In his quarterfinal match on Saturday, he squared off with Tobias Fanselow of Old Dominion and won easily 6-2, 6-3. Carleton followed with another straight set victory in the semifinals, defeating Simon Childs of Louisville 6-4, 6-1. In the finals, Carleton will match up against No. 104 Michael Shabaz of Virginia.
“We started off pretty slow today but picked things up," said head coach Ramsey Smith. "Reid (Carleton), Kiril (Dimitrov) and Dylan (Arnould) all had good days. Dylan won both of his backdraw matches pretty convincingly. It was good for Kiril to bounce back from a tough loss in the morning with a big win in the afternoon over a ranked player."
No. 103 Kiril Dimitrov was also in the quarterfinals but lost to the No. 4 seed Boris Conkic of Tennessee 6-3, 6-1. Conkic was ranked No. 55 in the preseason singles rankings. Dimitrov bounced back with a big win in the backdraw, downing No. 26 Austen Childs of Louisville 6-4, 6-4.
Jared Pinsky also won a backraw match against Virginia's Reese Milner while Dylan Arnould picked up two wins in the backraw, defeating Charles Bottoni of East Tennessee State and Matt Brewer of Tennessee.
Duke's doubles tandem of Dimitrov and Alain Michel could not sustain their momentum from day one. The duo ran in to Virginia Tech's Luka Somen and Nicolas Delgado and suffered an 8-3 loss. Dimitrov and Michel will compete in the third place match on Sunday.
In the doubles backdraw, Arnould and Torsten Wietoska earned an 8-6 victory over Tennessee's John-Patrick Smith and Davey Sandgren. The duo of Carleton and Pinsky lost 8-4 to Nebraska's Hendrik Stahmer and David Bendheim.
David Lue led the group of four players at the UNC Fall Invitational with two singles wins in the backdraw. He claimed a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) win over Rob Lowe of North Carolina State in his first match and then defeated Graham Edgar of North Florida 6-4, 6-3 to move to the backdraw finals.
Freshman Luke Marchese won his first match on Saturday. He downed Luke Mojica of North Carolina in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. He then lost to North Carolina's Clay Donato in a tough three-set match 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to set up a third place match on Sunday against Ivan Milivojevic of South Carolina State. Christopher Price and Aaron Carpenter each lost their singles matches on Saturday.
