CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Duke men's tennis team split a pair of singles matches Sunday to conclude the Charlotte 49ers Fall Invitational. Freshmen Spencer Furman captured his singles flight championship while Nick Stachowiak fell in three sets.
Furman, playing his first singles tournament of the fall, won the A1 flight and went 4-0 as the No. 1 seed. Furman took the title by downing No. 3 seed Diego Quiroz of Winthrop, 6-1, 7-6 (3).
In the A2 flight, Stachowiak was the top seed and battled No. 2 seed Henry Patten of UNC Asheville through three sets before falling 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. Stachowiak concludes his fall with an 11-4 singles record.
Duke plays in its final fall events next weekend with the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship in Flushing, N.Y., and the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic in Bradenton, Fla.
