DURHAM, N.C. – The Blue Devil volleyball team fought in tightly contested first and third sets, but was ultimately swept, 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-22), by No. 8 Louisville Friday night inside Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke drops to 5-15 overall and 2-7 in ACC matches, while the Cardinals improve to 15-4 overall and 7-2 in conference matchups.Â
Sophomore Taylor Williams and freshman Ashby Zubchevich led the Blue Devils' offense with 11 kills apiece, while freshman Charlotte Glass facilitated the offense with 23 assists. On defense, sophomore Mailinh Godschall logged seven digs, and Glass followed closely behind with six marks. At the net, redshirt senior Ngozi Iloh posted three blocks to lead Duke.Â
How It HappenedÂ
Set One – Duke 23, Louisville 25
- Louisville took an early lead in the match with a 25-23 win in the opening set. The Blue Devils came out swinging, owning a 7-2 advantage to start. The Cardinals responded with a four-point run, but Duke pushed its lead to 12-8 after taking five of the next seven points. Louisville rallied with a six-point surge to take a 14-12 margin before Duke answered with an 8-2 run to go ahead, 20-16. Despite the Blue Devils' late lead, Louisville gained momentum and claimed nine of the final 12 points to secure the 25-23 win.
Set Two – Duke 13, Louisville 25
- The Cardinals extended their match lead to 2-0 with a commanding 25-13 victory in the second frame. Louisville jumped out to a 17-5 edge before Duke countered by taking seven of the next 11 points, backed by a pair of kills apiece from Williams and sophomore Avery Hamlin, trimming the deficit to 21-12. The Cardinals closed the set by winning four of the final five points.
Set Three – Duke 22, Louisville 25
- Louisville sealed the straight-set win, taking the third frame, 25-22. Duke held an early 10-4 lead behind two kills each from Zubchevich and sophomore Breonna Goss. The Cardinals then used a 14-4 spurt to take an 18-14 cushion. Duke battled back, scoring five of the next eight points led by Williams' three kills, but Louisville closed out the match by capturing four of the final seven points.Â
