STANFORD, Calif. - No. 15 Duke men's tennis fell 4-0 to No. 9 Stanford Sunday afternoon at the Arrillaga Tennis Center-Taube Pavilion. Duke drops to 15-7 overall and 8-4 in conference, while the Cardinal improve to 18-5 overall and 9-3 in ACC matches.
Stanford earned the doubles point with victories at the first and second positions. The Cardinal clinched the match with wins in singles on courts two, four and six.
How It Happened
- Stanford took the 1-0 lead, clinching the doubles point with victories on courts one and two.
- Graduate student Remy Dugardin and junior Gerard Planelles Ripoll posted a 6-2 triumph on court three. Dugardin and Planelles Ripoll won three straight games to pull away from a 3-2 lead and claim the first doubles game.
- Graduate student Theo Winegar and senior Connor Krug fell 6-4 to Kyle Kang and Henry Von Der Schulenburg on court No. 2, evening the doubles score at 1-1.
- The Cardinal took the doubles point as junior Pedro Rodenas and graduate student Andreja Petrovic fell to Stanford's duo of Hudson Rivera and Nico Godsick at the top position. The match was tied at 4-4 before the Cardinal pair won two straight games to clinch the point.
- Stanford pushed its lead to 2-0 with a straight-set win on court four over Connor Krug. In the first set, Nico Godsick jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Krug won two of the next four games, making it 4-2. Von Der Schulenburg closed out the set with two straight games for a 6-2 triumph. The Cardinal posted a dominant 6-0 victory in the second set.
- Stanford stretched its lead to 3-0, as Dugardin fell in straight sets at the No. 2 position to No. 88 Max Basing. Tied at 1-1 in the first set, Basing won five consecutive games to take the opener. In the second set, Dugardin won two straight games to cut Basing's lead to 5-3, but Basing secured the next game to clinch the match.
- The Cardinal clinched the match with a straight-set win on court six over senior Jake Krug. The first set was tied four times before going to a tiebreak, where Hudson Rivera earned a 7-2 victory to take set one, 7-6(2). Krug won two games in the second set but was overpowered as Rivera closed it out with a four-game run to secure the match and the team win for Stanford.
- No. 47 Rodenas, Perovic and sophomore Alexander Visser's matches remained unfinished.
