ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 20 Duke men's tennis squad fell 4-0 at Georgia Friday evening at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Tennis Facility. Duke drops to 4-4 while the Bulldogs improve to 3-1.
Georgia earned the doubles point with victories at the first and second positions. The Bulldogs clinched the match with singles wins on courts three, six and four. Â
How It Happened
- In doubles, Georgia's court one pair of Arda Azkara and Santiago Giamichelle downed No. 36 Pedro Rodenas and Cooper Williams, 6-4. The Georgia duo turned a set that was even until 4-4 into a victory by winning the final two games.Â
- The Bulldog pair of Will Jansen and Gabriele Vulpitta defeated Dylan Long and Gerard Planelles Ripoll 7-5 on two to secure Georgia's first point. With each side dominating on serve, the set was knotted throughout until the Bulldogs went on a hold-break-hold run to capture the last three games for the match and doubles point.Â
- No. 28 Jansen tallied the Bulldogs' second point with a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Alexander Visser on court three. The opening set had Jansen hop out to a 3-0 lead before Visser clawed back and made it 4-2. Jansen took two of the last three for the set. Jansen again took an early lead in the second set, going up 3-1. Visser rallied to make it a 4-3 deficit, but Jansen took the final two for the match.Â
- Georgia pushed its lead to 3-0 with a court six win as No. 109 Vulpitta topped Teddy Truwit, 6-2, 6-4. Vulpitta took a 2-0 lead before Truwit closed the gap to 3-2, but Vulpitta ran off with the final three games. In the second, Truwit led 1-0 and 3-2 before Vulpitta knotted the action at 3-3 and 4-4 and won the final two for the match.Â
- Georgia added its fourth and final point on court four, where Derrick Chen downed No. 78 Planelles Ripoll, 6-1, 7-6 (7). After breezing through the opening set, Chen trailed 4-1 in the second set before storming back with four straight games to lead 5-4. Planelles Ripoll answered and sent the set to the tiebreaker. Neither side held more than a one-point lead until Chen broke a 7-7 tie with the final two points for the match.Â
