SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Duke volleyball team (5-13 overall, 2-5 ACC) fell to Syracuse (12-5 overall, 4-3 ACC) in straight sets, 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-20), Friday night inside the Women's Building in Syracuse, N.Y.
The Blue Devils were led offensively by redshirt senior Ngozi Iloh, who matched a career-high 14 kills on 23 swings for a .478 attack percentage. Redshirt junior Millie Muir paced the offense with 14 assists, while sophomore Mailinh Godschall tallied 10 digs to lead the defensive effort. Iloh also led Duke with 1.5 total blocks.
How It HappenedÂ
Set One – Duke 22, Syracuse 25Â
- Syracuse earned the early match lead with a 25-22 win in the opening frame. The Blue Devils held a 10-9 edge early on, but the Orange responded with an 11-4 run to take a 20-14 lead. Duke answered by winning five of the next six points, sparked by two kills from freshman Olivia Wayne, to pull within two, 21-19. The teams traded points late, but Syracuse closed out the set by taking two of the final three points.
Set Two – Duke 17, Syracuse 25Â
- The second set was tightly contested and featured eight ties, before the Orange came out on top, 25-17. The frame was knotted at 10-10 before Syracuse went on a 6-2 push to lead 16-12. Duke earned two straight points, but the Orange countered with a four-point stretch to extend their edge to 20-14. A kill from Wayne halted the momentum briefly, though Syracuse went on to claim five of the final seven points to take the frame.
Set Three – Duke 20, Syracuse 25
- The match was decided in the third, as Syracuse secured the set, 25-20. The Orange jumped out to a 12-9 advantage before Duke used a 4-1 run to even the score at 13-13. Syracuse answered with four straight points to push ahead 17-13, and despite Duke trimming the deficit to two at 19-17, the Orange closed the match by winning six of the final nine points.
